In youth soccer drills, the basis of a game is its defense and though I strongly believe in this, you may have your own opinions. When the score in a game is 0-0, it is said to be a perfectly played defensive soccer by both sides.

Yet, in kids soccer drills, there are two characteristics of winning a game. First is when an exceptional defense is demonstrated. And the second is when a team has a huge offense, capable of conquering the other team’s defense.

If your players are not able to get the ball, they’ll not be able to score. There are a few coaches who tend to teach their players either of the two; offense or defense. But, a complete player is one who is skilled at playing defensive soccer when the other party has the ball and offensive soccer when he himself has the ball.

In youth soccer practice, players who let the ball go out of their possession should instantly go for the ball. This works well because the player from whose custody the ball goes is the one closest to it. So it’s imperative for him or her to put pressure on the player who has the ball now.

Youth Soccer Drills

Has it ever occurred to you that head can be very effectively used in passing on the ball when it is still in the air? This does not hurt the player in any way if is it practiced correctly in the youth soccer drills.

Before you begin with training the players in the skill of heading, deflate the ball a bit especially when they are doing it the first time. This can be done by letting some air out of the ball so that it shrinks and becomes soft and supple for kids to play. When it comes to kids soccer drills, like always, begin with the basics of heading, some of which I’ll be happy to share with you.

When the ball is in air, teach the players to move along with it so that their body is directly in front of it when they face the ball. The players must keep their eyes fixed the ball all the way through, till the time it comes into contact with their forehead.

Let the kids understand the significance of keeping an eye on the ball and watch it coming to them and going away from them. They can be seriously hurt of they don’t keep their eyes open. In youth soccer practice, teach players to strike the ball with the forehead’s top-front part instead of the crown or temples.

Youth Soccer Drills

Almost all youth soccer drills emphasize the movement involved in properly heading the ball. Out of many, here are two drills that your players can perform.

Sitting and Knees: This drill in youth soccer coaching requires 2 players and a ball. One player should sit on the ground with the legs spread out in the front. Head out of Hands: You will need cones and a ball for each player in this drill. This drill requires the players to hold the ball with their hands and the throw it off by heading it. They should learn the art of moving their head to the ball and vice-versa.

When the cones are used, the kids learn to head the ball to a particular location. The players learn the techniques to head the ball in a direction using their head.

In kids soccer drills, it’s surprising that warm up before playing is considered unimportant. It is obligatory for me as a coach to highlight the fact that warm up sessions before practice is compulsory and helps players begin their day at a brilliant note. In youth soccer drills, this point is easily skipped by many coaches. The result is injuries to players while performing drills.

This article gives you some nice tips on how to get the team warmed up. Teach the players to warm up by following those body movements that help all muscles to work up. This is by far the best way to activate all the body parts. Doing things fast can lead to cramps or stiffness in the muscles.

Tip 1: In this make the players go for a light 5 to 7 minute jog. A few minutes of jogging and then moving on to sprinting is the best proposition. The pulse rate must get to 120 beats per minute in this. However, slow progress is the key. Then make them swing their legs forward cross-body for about 10 times each. Finally, over 20 yards, make them stretch actively.

Tip 2: But make sure that this active stretching over 20 yards goes with a few warm up exercises of its own. For instance, the players should practice hopping forward and backward. You can also teach them cross stepping. They must also be taught high-knee carioca. You can have these performed similar to sprinting.

Backward run is also a highly effective warm up drill in soccer drills for kids. But the best way to carry it out is to raise the heels up to the butt. No doubt, it is a little difficult to practice it this way but there’s no other way of correctly doing it.

Tip 3: There are other essential warm up exercises in kids soccer drills that build up the momentum to the actual session. The players can be taught to hop with swings and loops. These result in giving an extra edge to the skipping exercises. Also have your players do the cross-over hopping. Quick Hip Swings is somewhat difficult to practice but it highly useful and a tried and tested technique to warm up the body.

Subsequently the players can be made to do long shuffle with spins midway. Have the players move back and forth using their legs. It’s a very efficient activity and helps in toning the body. Similarly high leg forward and backward is very useful too.

Tip 4: Stretching should be carried out properly and sufficiently. Stretch hinging is most beneficial for the legs. Guarantee that all kids work out their hamstring, groin, calf muscles, and quadriceps without missing any of these. Stretching has the benefit of preventing injury along with increasing the muscle range.

It is obligatory for me as a coach to highlight the fact that warm up sessions before practice is compulsory and helps players begin their day at a brilliant note. In youth soccer drills, coaches fail to take this aspect into consideration. The consequences are then faced by the players when they suffer injuries in training.

In this article, you’ll find some useful tips on warming up the players. The team should be guided to use such body movements that have the effect of warming up all muscles. This is by far the best way to activate all the body parts. Warming up in haste could cause cramping or stiffness of the body muscles.

Tip 1: First and foremost the players should jog for 5-7 minutes. A few minutes of jogging and then moving on to sprinting is the best proposition. After that, have the players do the long shuffles along with twists halfway. Have the players move back and forth using their legs. This is a highly effective and useful body toning activity. In the same way, high leg forwards and backwards is also very effective.

Tip 4: Stretch adequately and complete it in the approved manner. What works best for the legs is stretch hinging. Make sure all players have worked out their quadriceps, calves, hamstring, and groin without fail. It is stretching that helps in increasing the range of muscles together with preventing any injury to the player.
