Soccer – The Birth Of A Goalkeeper Coach

“You’ve go to be kidding?” I asked “That was a definite dive!”, but the referee was having none of it and duly awarded a penalty. These things happen as part and parcel of the game but when it’s on your debut for a club that’s just made you their highest paid player the timing could have been better it’s got to be said! I remonstrated long enough to annoy the penalty taker and somehow still managed to avoid a yellow. It was a penalty, that I couldn’t deny, but the fact that it was totally my causing made it worse. A routine through ball which required a basic sliding gather of the ball saw me bring my knees in to protect me far too early and the ball bounced off my knees and into the path of the onrushing striker. Panic always sets in then as you have just a split second to attack the ball again, except that I didn’t, I chose to go straight for his legs as he’d just drawn level with me and I was still on the floor. I managed to get enough traction to push myself into his path and outstretched my arm to successfully deny him an open goal. Quite how I never received a card for it I’ll never know but I was always lucky with referees in that regards. I’ve always tried to treat the referees with huge respect as I could never do that job and I hope that the fact that I caused them relatively few headaches during my career helped to appease them a little in situations such as these. My mistake, sorry boys, but now it’s up to me to do something about it.

Every pre-season you do a lot of conditioning, and then when the season starts you stop doing all intense-related work because you are afraid the players might get sore or tired during the in-season period. So when the season is over the players have a few weeks (months?) off from training, and then when they start the pre-season again, you start doing all the conditioning all over again.

I have seen this happen for the last 10 years and experienced it myself as a player. At the end of the pre-season, you feel like you  are unbeatable, but somewhere during the season you lose that feeling, and when the next pre-season starts again, it feels like you’re starting again from square one. I like to sum this up and give you my idea and explanation on how YOU should set it up. To sum it up, I’d like to quote Will Smith:

“If you stay ready, you ain’t gotta get ready”

With that being said, if you work on maintaining a good level of conditioning all year round you don’t have to build it back up when the pre-season starts again, you can either take it to the next level or plain and simple just work on what soccer really is all about – playing soccer!

My players have a really great level of conditioning and therefore I am able to really work on developing their ability to play soccer, and develop their ability to play it at a high speed and a high level.

Stall. Again, this is precisely what it sound like: You’re “stalling” the footbag with various parts of your body, in order to exert more control over it. Think of it as catching the bag with the inside or outside of your foot, or your toe. There’s also a move called a “clipper stall,” which is an inside stall made while your foot is behind the opposite leg.

Arm Stall. You might think this move is a bit odd, since it involves arms instead of feet and legs. But many of the best footbag artists use whatever body parts make for the best maneuvers. To initiate this move, it’s important to kick the footbag high enough that you can reach it with your elbow. Then catch the bag in the crook of your elbow, and immediately straighten your arm to “bump” the footbag back into the game.

For instance, let me give you one example of one of the absolute best drills to improve the players condition as well as their ability to make good decisions during a soccer game:

= Small-Sided Games

The variations are endless, and by making a few small adjustments, you make these drills so intense and demanding that it’s insane.

At the end of a game when the players are tired, the team where the players can make the best decisions is the team that will win the game. Sure, you may be able to run a mile at a pretty decent time, but that’s got nothing to do with soccer.

You need to be able to perform a lot of high intensity runs and recover quickly, and maintain you mental state and make good decisions when you are tired!

So by doing a lot of small-sided games where you play for instance 4 vs 4, you can make the drill more intense and demanding by having the players play man-to-man defense, meaning when they lose the ball, they have one player they should mark and follow all over the field, no matter what!

That’s a great conditioning drill, and best of all – it’s fun!

To sum it up – conditioning should be done on the soccer field (at the end of the practice) and it should be maintained all year round, even during in-season

What Are Foreign Players Doing To Italys Chances?

England has been facing more and more criticism over the fact that the Premier League is so overpopulated with foreign players that young English players don’t have the opportunity to grow adequately. But that same argument could equally be given for Italian football’s current lack of talented superstars.

In recent times the Azzuri have been less than impressive. Their qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup finals was hardly impressive, relying on a last gasp equaliser in Ireland to put them into the finals after a series of unimpressive drawn games. Italy’s disappointment only grew in the finals, where their first two games against Paraguay and New Zealand were supremely lackluster.

Italy was hurt by their lack of ingenuity in attack, despite their renowned defensive abilities. Italy missed the cunning of Andrea Pirlo, a looming threat from a player of the amplitude of Francesco Totti, and the usually great from of Luca Toni; what is worse, Italy may struggle to find new players to fill the latest soccer jersey. Inter Milan made Jose Mourinho proud as the won the Serie A and Coppa Italia in 2010, ending up lifting the Europeans Champions League 2-0 against Bayern Munich at a match in Madrid. Disappointingly, Inter failed to contribute any players to the World Cup Squad for Italy. Inter’s first team hardly ever contained an Italian player for most of the season. Young Mario Balotelli and Davide Santon did in fact make a lasting contribution, but were used mostly as substitutes and neither player ended up on the final squad for the showpiece in South Africa.

A quick scout through the Serie A giants reveals a worrying trend. AC Milan can be commended for a higher amount of Italians in their first team, but this victory is diminished by the fact that most of these people are nearing or beyond thirty. It’s a slightly rosier picture at Juventus, but only just thanks to the likes of Chiellini, Giovinco and De Ceglie coming through the ranks to supplement the impressive Marchisio in midfield. A large amount of Juventus Italian nationals, and especially those that are first team caliber, are all above thirty.

More and more, the majority of the players on the Italian national team are not coming out of the top four to five teams from Serie A, but instead from the teams which sit just outside of this elite crew. The Italian World Cup team has, at present, 6 players hailing from Juventus, with three under the age of thirty, 3 from Milan, one from Roma, but also has 3 from Napoli, two from Genoa, two coming from Sampdoria, 2 from Fiorentina, and one each who come from Bari, Cagliari and Udinese.  There is also a player from Al Ahli of the UAE (Fabio Cannavaro).

The trend is not stopping anytime soon, thanks to the ages of top players this may become a worry for both Azzuri managers and the Italian FA alike. A great many Italian players are declining participation in the Champions League each season, a fact that hurts Italian players’ performance against the competition.

Italy does have hope for the future, with players like Domenico Criscito, Salvatore Bocchetti, Giampaolo Pazzini, and Leonardo Bonucci as up and coming players. Sadly, though, these players are likely to gain their football education not on the pitches of Old Trafford, Allianz Arena, Bernebeu and Nou Camp but on those of Palermo, Bari, Cagliari, and Lazio.

The Italian side needs to begin worrying about the state of their leagues. Without a strong national identity, can a player really defend a nation with the vim and vigor of patriotism?
